Chapter 13. The Fog
It all started with that damn fog! I was sitting on the ground, having previously buried a large stone heated by the fire under my ass, and leaning my back against Max's back. It was relatively warm. Max was dozing at the time, periodically shuddering, either from the cold or from nightmares.
I closed my eyes and got lost in thought. About nothing and everything at once: about Nicole, about Taylor, about Ms. Norris, about Barney, about the trip, about Eleanor and her boyfriend... About the Patterns... Especially about the Patterns.
Why didn't my two Patterns burn out when I scratched the third one on my body too soon? Maybe my Regeneration helped? Maybe. In my previous life, my Regeneration Pattern wasn't as strong and black. My Patterns got dark enough only at the very end when I became old enough and stopped shaking every time I applied them.
The last Pattern I made back in that world, the Rebirth Pattern, most likely turned out to be black, judging by what a young and potentially strong body I got. I chuckled, remembering how unhappy I was when I first opened my eyes in this world and saw my new body. Idiot!
Black Regeneration⦠That explained a lot. But now I was impatient to test my guess and finally apply the Speed Pattern. Not on this camping trip, of course... I definitely needed Speed. That was the only way I could somehow compete with the local Magicians.
Our Patterns were only aimed at strengthening the body and spirit â we didn't have any magic similar to what people of this era had. But even with the Speed, I could have competed with Nathan instead of standing in front of him like a helpless mouse in front of a snake.
I went over the Speed Pattern in my head several times and even drew it in front of me with a stick on the ground. It turned out clumsily, but this time, I did not forget those damn curlicues that distinguish it from the Pattern of the Prying Eyes.
Max twitched again, shifted in place, leaned more comfortably on my back with his own, and became quiet again. I opened my eyes and tried to blink several times. Something was wrong with my eyes... Some kind of milky gray veil, as if I was deep under dirty water. There was no light coming from the campfire, only warmth. After all, no one "fed" it anymore â we ran out of firewood long before the night ended.
No, there was nothing wrong with my eyes... It was a fog. It was a little hard to breathe, especially if taking deep breaths â I immediately felt a spasm in my chest and coughed.
I turned my head and looked towards our tents. Nicole, whom I forced to rest a little before the hard road, slept in one of them. And in the other one⦠I had no idea who was in the second tent, but it was probably Nathan and our alpha leader â they were supposed to sleep from three to six in the morning.
